Technical Architecture & Engineering Overview

Detailed system design and core implementation

Core Architecture Athena runs as an Electron application where the renderer process hosts a Vite‑powered React UI. The UI renders a 3D avatar using a bespoke Three.js engine that manages VRM models, FBX animations, and real‑time lip‑sync via FFT audio analysis. MediaPipe provides webcam‑based face tracking to drive eye contact and blinking.

Data Flow & Microservices User speech is captured by the browser Web Speech API or selected STT provider (e.g., DeepgramSTTAdapter, GroqWhisperSTTAdapter). Audio is streamed to the local Whisper‑fast FastAPI service (POST /stt) which returns transcriptions. The transcribed text is fed to a LangGraph agent (Node.js) that routes requests to LLM providers (Gemini, Ollama, custom) and executes tools such as web search or RAG. Responses are sent to a TTS provider (POST /tts on the SuperTonic service) or external services (OpenAI tts-1, Azure) and played back, triggering lip‑sync updates.

Security & Guardrails All inter‑process communication is mediated by Electron's contextBridge with strict channel whitelisting. Microservices expose minimal HTTP endpoints (/health, /status) and run on dynamically assigned ports to avoid collisions. API keys for external providers are entered via the settings modal and never persisted to disk.

Build & Deployment The monorepo uses npm workspaces. Frontend assets are bundled with Vite, while backend services are containerized via Docker for reproducible local development. The npm start script launches Electron, the React renderer, and the Python/Node microservices concurrently.
